At the start of a race

At the start of a race there is a galore of emotions that pass trough an athletes mind.  Lets discuss our thoughts individually:

Jayme:  At the start of the race I get a sickening feeling in my body.  I feel like I have the weight of the world on my shoulders and the only way to get the weight off is to hear the BANG of the gun.  After the blast, it is all up to me to do what needs to be done: run my race.

Drue:  When I am at the start line with the adrenaline rushing through my blood, I feel like I just want to go home.  But then I realize that I have trained so long to be where I am right now.  I feel the pressure to do well, not only for my team, but for myself.  I then feel a sense of confidence and security that carries me through to when the gun goes off.

This not only applies to track and field.. it applies to life in general.  Starting a new business, class, job etc. can also arouse many types of like emotions.  The feeling of pressure haunts us all, but, we can all use it to our advantage in life by letting it motivate us.  You will never know what it feels like until you put yourself into an uncomfortable situation but this could lead to success and new opportunities.

      I couldn’t agree with you anymore! It’s a feeling everyone feels and it could either make you or break you. It can be used in different contexts, it all depends on the situation. Pressure is an entity that doesn’t come to stay but it has come to pass and it’s our job to make sure we learn how to control it. When you control it, you will grow!

    In a sense, I think part of me hates pressure (athletically I was “practice-All Star” in my youth), and it was a bit frustrating. It has taken a bit of time for me to realize how pressure creates the drive to move up to a higher level. To use it and understand in its purest form. Pressure is intensity, and if the focus is there, not much can stop you in succeeding (whatever that success may be).

      Pressure is created out of the respect you have for whatever situation you are in. It can be tough to deal with but wants you can learn to handle pressure, it could set you apart from everyone else. Making you one unique individual. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on my blog!

    I would so much love to participate in a race. Just for the fun of it.
    I think it’s competition that ruins the fun of anything. Easier said than done, I know!

      A race can be ran for fun, for competition, or both, depends on your motive for walking up to the starting line. People want to be the best and the only way to find out is to compete against others. This makes it more for business and not fun. Thanks for taking the time to comment on our blog!

    I like this blog! It’s quick, yet it brings up powerful memories, of my track and field days when I was in Jr high school racing at the big “City Wide” track meets, where I ran the fast, yet grueling 220 and then, was the anchor for the girls relay. Came in second both times, but we ran excellent races.
    The pressure an athlete feels just before you hear “GO” is a bizarre and magical moment, because you’re half “peaceful warrior” and half wild animal , waiting to explode every ounce of muscle energy towards it’s prey. The anxiety is thick.
    I like this blogs connection of sports with life experiences and it resonates with my desire to have a better internal focus on what I want to achieve each day, heck every minute…Every minute can be a small explosion to the finish line

    To be honest, I’m an Athlete in my Schools but it just faded away from me. Lots of factors involved with that and I came past from that. I was doing 100m, 200m, Long Jump, High Jump and 4×100m Relay events. I have felt different kinds of emotions and feelings before even the race starts… I hated that stuff which would always making me to somehow avoid the race but having won some of the events later, it would make me think why I was thinking like that.

      I think it’s because you’re anxious for the race to just start. Usually the nerves go away when the gun goes off. Your mind is preparing your body to compete and run fast. The brain sends signals of adrenaline at once and that’s why you have feelings of many emotions. Thank you for sharing your past experiences, I like hearing different reactions to the feeling we get before a race.

    Pressure creates opportunities for great moments! Each race is an opportunity to do something special-some races are more pressure filled then others. I tell my athletes don’t fear failure. If you fail or fall short of a goal giving everything in the pursuit then we will live with it. You may have to fail several times chasing a time or goal before you achieve it and if you keep that in mind it might make dealing with perceived pressure easier.
